Sunway University (Malaysia) and the University of Debrecen (Hungary) have jointly published a bilingual volume featuring János Xántus’ 19th-century Borneo travels, translated into English for the first time. The book, supported by scholars and institutions across continents, marks a cultural and academic milestone—reconnecting Hungary and Malaysia through literature, history, and shared heritage.
Co-edited by Tamás Kiss (SU), Balázs Venkovits (DE), and Christopher Higgs (Borneo Perantis), the volume offers both Hungarian and English texts with extensive footnotes. The collaboration involved historians, linguists, and ethnographers, with contributions from the Budapest Museum of Ethnography.
Following its release by Sunway University Press, the book will be presented in Debrecen on June 14, with further launches in Budapest, Oradea, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore. It is expected to be the first in a new series publishing Hungarian travel accounts from the East.
