Semmelweis University hosted an official delegation from the Republic of Botswana, culminating in the signing of a memorandum of cooperation aimed at advancing healthcare and higher education. Rector Dr. Béla Merkely and President Duma Gideon Boko formalized the agreement, marking Semmelweis University’s first major step toward scientific collaboration with the African continent.
The five-year agreement outlines long-term goals for academic exchange, joint research, and training between the two institutions. It enables faculty, researchers, and PhD students to collaborate across borders and emphasizes the organization of shared events such as seminars, courses, and summer schools.
Botswana, known for having the third highest GDP per capita in southern Africa, continues to invest significantly in education and health systems. The partnership reflects both countries’ commitment to scientific excellence and international knowledge exchange.
The initiative enhances Semmelweis University’s global presence—already enrolling students from 129 countries—and reinforces its vision to lead in international education and healthcare development.
