The University of Szeged and AstraZeneca have elevated their collaboration to a strategic partnership aimed at advancing data-driven health research, developing new clinical programs, and improving patient care across Hungary and beyond.
The agreement, announced in Szeged, focuses on early diagnosis, treatment innovations, and educational initiatives targeting widespread public health concerns and rare diseases. A key goal is to enhance patient pathway management by analyzing extensive health data, laying the groundwork for more informed health policy decisions.
Prof. Dr. László Rovó, Rector of the University of Szeged, highlighted the institution’s unique capacity to integrate clinical care, research, and education under one framework. “This partnership allows us to fully harness the power of joint innovation, benefiting patients across all ages,” he said.
Ongoing joint projects include efforts to improve the early detection of diabetes—a disease affecting over a million people in Hungary—and to identify risk factors tied to severe complications like kidney disease and cardiovascular conditions.
Kuuno Vaher, AstraZeneca’s Central European Cluster Director, emphasized the value of collaboration in developing complex treatment protocols, noting that Hungary’s strong scientific community and digital infrastructure provide an excellent base for such initiatives.
Prof. Dr. Ildikó Csóka, Director-General for Strategic Affairs at SZTE, added that the partnership marks a major milestone, fostering an ecosystem where research, clinical practice, and industry expertise converge to drive healthcare forward.
