The Faculty of Economics at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), Hungary, has earned global recognition for its groundbreaking digital exam center, which slashes paper use and boosts efficiency.
The university’s self-financed, paperless exam center administers nearly 288,000 exams a year using a closed IT system with 200 low-power Raspberry Pi workstations. This innovation cuts annual paper usage by over 5.5 tons and saves around 100 million HUF, while also ensuring data security and equal opportunities for students with special needs.
The project received the prestigious Quality Innovation Award 2024 in the “Educational Innovations” category, selected from 557 entries worldwide. The award ceremony took place in Budapest on May 28, 2025, where Vice Dean Zsuzsanna Eszter Tóth accepted the honor.
With its automated scheduling, privacy measures, and eco-friendly operations, ELTE’s exam center stands as a model for sustainability and modernization in higher education.
