Semmelweis University organized the Spring Wind Conference 2025, the largest international gathering for PhD students in Hungary, from June 20 to 22. Held at the initiative of the university’s Doctoral Students’ Union (DÖK), the event welcomed master’s and doctoral students, early-career researchers, and leaders from across Hungary.
At the opening, Dr. Béla Merkely, Rector of Semmelweis and President-elect of the Hungarian Rectors’ Conference, highlighted that today’s major scientific breakthroughs require collaboration across disciplines and borders. The conference featured 40 scientific sessions in English and Hungarian, covering a wide range of research topics.
László Bódis, Deputy State Secretary for Innovation, introduced Hungary’s new three-tier doctoral training system launching in September and spoke about the National Research Excellence Program, which supports PhD students joining high-level research projects. Meanwhile, Dr. Valéria Csépe underlined that international experts and student delegates play a crucial role in Hungary’s accreditation processes, ensuring global standards.
The event also saw a cooperation agreement signed between the Association of Hungarian PhD and DLA Candidates (DOSZ) and the Hungarian Development Promotion Office (MFOI). Following this, 43 new DOSZ ambassadors received their letters of credence, strengthening national and international networks.
Semmelweis University reported strong growth in doctoral studies, with 1,201 PhD students enrolled in 2024-2025, including 400 international students. The university views doctoral education, including through the Stipendium Hungaricum program, as a vital investment in the future of science and healthcare.
