The University of Pécs hosted the 49th Annual Conference of the American Hungarian Educators Association (AHEA) from June 19 to 21 at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Titled “Transatlantic Insights: Scholarship in Hungarian and American Contexts,” the event brought together over 80 participants, many delivering presentations on Hungarian culture, history, literature, language, and the arts.
Held at the Pécs Regional Committee headquarters of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the conference also served as a community forum, strengthening ties among Hungarians in the diaspora. AHEA, founded in 1974, promotes Hungarian studies across the US, Canada, and Central Europe. Every five years, its conference returns to a university in the Carpathian Basin.
Dr. Mónika Fodor, head of the Department of Literatures and Cultures in English at Pécs and chief local organizer, highlighted the aim of encouraging dialogue beyond presentations. The three-day program featured parallel academic sessions, a Fulbright alumni meetup, cultural events, and concluded with a dinner at Villány.
Organizers received enthusiastic feedback, with discussions often continuing informally — fulfilling AHEA’s goal of fostering an engaged, international scholarly community.
