The Eszterházy Károly Catholic University concluded its historic 250th academic year with a series of diploma award ceremonies held on July 3 and 4 in the Eger Basilica. A record 1,334 graduates completed their final exams at the end of the 2024-25 academic year.
The ceremonies began with addresses by Dr. Csaba Ternyák, Archbishop of Eger and Grand Chancellor of the university, who highlighted the harmony between faith and reason that has long defined the institution. He quoted Einstein, reminding the audience that science without religion is lame and religion without science is blind.
The event was also attended by Dr. Balázs Hankó, Minister for Culture and Innovation, who praised Hungarian higher education’s growing international success. He noted that twelve Hungarian institutions rank among the top five percent of universities worldwide, with Eszterházy also listed among Europe’s best 600 universities. The minister shared a personal moment, mentioning that his wife received her degree in chemistry teaching at the same ceremony.
Rector Dr. Ilona Pajtókné Tari reflected on the university’s dual jubilee, celebrating both 250 years since education began within the Lyceum walls and the 300th anniversary of founder Bishop Károly Eszterházy’s birth. She stressed that graduates carry the responsibility of shaping the future, equipped not only with expertise and practical experience but also with essential human values.
Graduates received their diplomas individually, greeted by applause and congratulations from university leaders and local dignitaries. Student speaker Zoltán Brézai symbolically returned the city keys to Mayor Ákos Vágner, who expressed gratitude to the university for its high-quality, value-driven education and urged graduates to contribute to Eger’s renewal.
The ceremonies featured musical performances by students from the university’s affiliated primary and secondary schools. Numerous academic awards were also presented, honoring excellence across scientific, pedagogical, and artistic fields.
Eszterházy University invited all new graduates to join its alumni community.
