The Austrian Science Fund’s (FWF) alpha+ Foundation has appointed Sabine Seidler, former Rector of TU Wien, as its new honorary Chair. The alpha+ Foundation, established in 2019, mobilizes philanthropic funding to support basic research across Austrian universities and research institutions.
Seidler joins Ursula Jakubek and Susanne Müller-Taborsky on the foundation’s board. She will serve as a key contact for individuals and organizations wishing to fund high-quality research grants and collaborations through FWF’s rigorous processes.
“With Sabine Seidler, the alpha+ Foundation has gained a leading voice for knowledge-driven research and philanthropy,” said FWF President Christof Gattringer, praising her expertise in advancing Austria’s research ecosystem.
Seidler emphasized the importance of private contributions: “Charitable foundations strengthen the freedom of basic research and support bold ideas where state funding often ends. I look forward to fostering partnerships between researchers and industry to advance innovative projects, especially those aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.”
The alpha+ Foundation currently channels around €2.5 million annually in private donations, funding initiatives such as the Zero Emissions Award for climate research and the WE&ME Award for ME/CFS studies.
Seidler succeeds Georg Winckler, who played a key role in founding the foundation and launching its initial fundraising successes. Under Seidler’s leadership, the foundation aims to expand its impact and secure long-term support for Austria’s basic research.
