The University of Wrocław (UWr) team has reached the halfway point of the GeoArctic Expedition 2025 aboard the STS Generał Zaruski. On 3 August, the crew docked in Ny-Ålesund, the world’s northernmost settlement, where they are taking a two-day break due to stormy winds after a demanding yet successful first week.
Since arriving in Longyearbyen on 26 July, the expedition has combined scientific fieldwork with Arctic sailing training. Participants have explored sites including the Global Seed Vault, conducted lectures at the BERA Science Station, and completed multiple landings to collect ice, sediment, and rock samples in Hornsund, Hytte Bay, and Bellsund. They also visited Polish and UMCS research stations and engaged with scientists from the Nicolaus Copernicus University.
Field studies have focused on glaciers such as Werenskiold, hydrogeological surveys, and serpentinite research, while wildlife sightings included walruses, seals, and dolphins. The expedition also honored the Warsaw Uprising with a ceremony held far north at sea.
In addition to research, participants have trained extensively in sailing skills, navigation, and ship maintenance under Arctic conditions. The team continues to share updates through Polish Radio Program 1, with broadcasts scheduled for 7 August.
