Moving to a new city can be exciting but also a bit overwhelming. To make the transition easier for international students, Budapesti Corvinus University has released a quick and practical guide to getting around Budapest, one of Europe’s most student-friendly capitals.
Public transport made simple
Budapest’s extensive and reliable public transport system covers metro lines, buses, trams, and trolleybuses, all accessible with a single ticket. The university recommends downloading the BudapestGo app, which allows students to plan routes, buy and store tickets, and check real-time schedules with ease.
Choose the right travel pass
For regular commuting, travel passes offer greater value than single tickets. Options include the Budapest Pass (for city use), the Pest County Pass (for suburban areas), and the Hungary Pass (for nationwide travel, including trains). Student discounts are available with a valid student ID.
Airport transport tip
The 100E bus connects Budapest Airport directly with central locations such as Kálvin tér, Astoria, and Deák Ferenc tér. This express service requires a separate ticket costing 2,200 HUF, which can be purchased at vending machines, via the BudapestGo app, or with a card on the bus.
Don’t forget to validate
Whether using paper tickets or digital ones, validation is required. Physical tickets go through yellow or grey machines, while app users scan the QR codes on board.
Explore from the water or bike
For a unique way to see the city, students are encouraged to try BKK public boats that travel along the Danube. These are included in the standard ticket system. The MOL Bubi bike-sharing service is another great option for quick trips, and its app makes finding and unlocking bikes simple.
Stay safe with trusted transport
For taxi services, students are advised to use trusted providers like Bolt, Főtaxi, or Uber, and to avoid hailing taxis on the street.
Best way to get to know the city? Walk
With its historic streets, beautiful architecture, and lively atmosphere, Budapest is perfect for walking. Budapesti Corvinus University encourages students to explore on foot and fully immerse themselves in the city’s charm.
