The University of Szeged was proudly represented by seven students at the 32nd Summer World University Games, held this year in Germany’s Rhine-Ruhr region. The Hungarian national delegation delivered its most successful performance to date, winning a total of 18 medals – 10 silver and 8 bronze – at the international multi-sport event.
Among the nearly 8,500 student-athletes from 150 countries competing in 18 different sports, Hungary fielded 178 athletes from 46 higher education institutions. Representing the University of Szeged were athletes Renáta Beregszászi and Réka Kling, judoka Ágnes Nikolett Sági, badminton players Bálint and Balázs Pápai, and water polo players Botond Bóbis and Benedek Danka.
Ágnes Nikolett Sági earned an impressive 7th place in the 78 kg judo category, while Bóbis and Danka played for the Hungarian university water polo team, which secured 4th place overall.
György Fekete, operational manager of the SZTE IKIKK Third Mission Developments Cluster, highlighted the broader value of competitive sports at the University of Szeged, stating that these events not only foster sports performance but also community building, international relations, and personal development. He emphasized that values such as perseverance, teamwork, and fair play align closely with the university’s educational and research mission.
The Universiade, also known as the World University Games, has been a cornerstone of global student athletics since 1959. It is held biennially on different continents and serves as a qualifying platform for both the Olympic Games and World Championships in many sports.
