Rectors from all Belgian universities, including the Université Libre de Bruxelles, have issued a joint declaration urging the Belgian government to take decisive and humane action in response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The statement condemns all forms of violence and dehumanization, citing over 60,000 civilian casualties, severe food shortages, and restrictions on humanitarian aid.
The rectors call for the immediate and unrestricted delivery of humanitarian assistance, emphasizing that air drops alone cannot address the crisis. They stress the need for a full ceasefire and the suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, highlighting that respect for human rights must underpin all international cooperation.
Echoing UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the statement frames the situation as a “test of our shared humanity” and urges Belgian leaders to act in solidarity with international voices — including some in Israel — calling for urgent relief.
