Scientists at the UmeƄ Plant Science Centre, part of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, have identified the OPENER protein complex, a key player in ribosome assembly in plants. The discovery emerged from research into unknown genes essential for early seed development in Arabidopsis. Using advanced cell biology, biochemistry, and the AI-based AlphaFold protein modeling tool, the team found that OPENER and its interacting partners form a claw-like structure positioned around both the cell nucleus and mitochondria. This dual localization suggests an additional regulatory layer in ribosome production, indicating that the process in plants is more complex than previously thought. The findings open new opportunities for basic research and may contribute to innovations in crop yield and resilience.
