A study by the University of Helsinki and HUS Helsinki University Hospital shows that multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria are spreading from war-zone hospitals to other countries, particularly among patients with war injuries. Among Ukrainian refugees hospitalized due to war injuries, nearly 80% carried MDR bacteria, whereas non-hospitalized refugees had no higher prevalence than Finns traveling abroad.
The research highlights that hospital settings in conflict zones facilitate the spread of difficult-to-treat bacteria. Finnish healthcare systems manage this risk by isolating patients previously hospitalized abroad and conducting thorough bacterial testing. The study is part of the Finnish Multidisciplinary Centre of Excellence in Antimicrobial Resistance Research (FIMAR), funded by the Research Council of Finland.
