The University of Szeged has once again confirmed its status as Hungary’s leading higher education institution, securing a place in the 401–500 range of the 2025 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai Ranking. This makes the University of Szeged the only Hungarian university to appear in the global top 500 this year, underscoring its long-standing reputation for academic excellence.
The ARWU, published annually by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, is recognized as one of the most rigorous and influential global university rankings. More than 2,500 universities are evaluated each year, but only the top 1,000 earn a spot on the list. The methodology considers multiple performance indicators, including the quality of education, research productivity, citation impact, and academic recognition of faculty, researchers, and alumni. Notably, distinctions such as Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals are also taken into account, making ARWU one of the most selective measures of global academic prestige.
The University of Szeged has consistently held its ground on this list, reflecting the institution’s broad strengths in education, healthcare, research, and the arts. Its placement highlights the university’s significant contributions to scientific output, impactful research collaborations, and strong academic community.
On the international stage, SZTE’s partnerships further reinforce its standing. Through the European University Alliance for Global Health (EUGLOH), the university collaborates with other globally ranked institutions, including Université Paris-Saclay, LMU Munich, Lund University, the University of Porto, and the University of Hamburg. These partnerships extend beyond research, supporting initiatives in education, student mobility, and cross-border healthcare innovation.
Globally, the ARWU 2025 ranking is once again dominated by American and British institutions. Harvard University maintained its top position, followed by Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), continuing the trend of U.S. leadership in higher education.
For Hungary, the result underscores the University of Szeged’s singular role in representing the country at the highest levels of academia. Only four Hungarian universities appeared anywhere on the 2025 ARWU list, but none apart from SZTE made it into the world’s top 500. This achievement further solidifies SZTE’s place as a cornerstone of Hungarian higher education and a respected member of the global academic community.
