A new study by University College Dublin and Dublin City University finds that work-family conflict is a major contributor to psychological distress among Irish farmers. Researchers surveyed 446 farmers across Ireland and identified links between farm-family stress and poor mental health outcomes, including depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts.
The study highlights that younger farmers, male farmers, those working longer hours, and dairy or mixed farmers experience higher levels of conflict. Researchers emphasize the need for targeted mental health support that accounts for the integration of farm and family life and involve farming families in designing support strategies.
