Atlantic Technological University (ATU) is now offering a broad range of micro-credentials designed to provide flexible, industry-relevant learning opportunities for students, professionals, and lifelong learners. These short, accredited courses aim to help individuals upskill, reskill, or return to education, supporting career development across multiple sectors.
Over 30 micro-credential programs are available across ATU’s campuses in Galway, Mayo, Sligo, and Donegal, with many courses also delivered online to accommodate flexible learning schedules. Thanks to funding support from the Human Capital Initiative (HCI) Pillar 3 Micro-Credentials Learner Fee Subsidy, eligible learners can access up to 80 percent funding on select programs, with additional supports available through Skillnet Ireland, DASBE, and Springboard+.
Micro-credentials, also known as Special Purpose Awards, Minor Awards, or Supplementary Awards, are designed to be bite-sized qualifications ranging from 5 to 30 credits. They enable learners to quickly develop new competencies or enhance existing skills in areas aligned with industry demand and societal needs.
ATU offers programs in specialized areas including Bioprocessing and Biomedical Science, Biopharmaceutical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Medical Device Technology, Project Management, Environmental Sustainability, and Healthcare, Sport, and Education. These programs combine theoretical learning with practical application, ensuring graduates are prepared for both workplace demands and professional advancement.
The courses have already demonstrated impact for learners. For example, Craig Gibbs, a district inspector for the Office of Public Works, completed the Certificate in Access and Use, noting that the knowledge gained enhanced his on-site decision-making and improved his career prospects. Lisa Regan, who completed the Sustainable Development Goals micro-credential, reported being able to apply course insights directly in her professional and personal life, highlighting the empowering nature of these programs.
Applications for the next intake are open until August 15, 2025, and students can enroll in one program per academic year. More information on ATU’s micro-credential offerings, funding options, and application procedures can be found at www.atu.ie/microcredentials.
This initiative reinforces ATU’s commitment to lifelong learning, industry engagement, and supporting learners to meet evolving workplace challenges, while strengthening Ireland’s skilled workforce for sectors experiencing rapid growth and innovation.
