PHD Researcher Elena Jiménez Romanillos at Linköping University is studying how packaging-free foods can reduce environmental emissions while still meeting consumer needs.
Her research investigates consumer reactions to packaging-free systems and explores how food retailers can design solutions that reduce reliance on single-use packaging. While removing packaging can lower emissions, it must be balanced with practical concerns such as food preservation and convenience. For instance, vacuum packaging can extend shelf life and reduce waste for energy-intensive products like meat.
Through surveys, interviews, and observations, Jiménez Romanillos has identified different consumer behavior types—some motivated by price, others by sustainability, and some by convenience. These behaviors influence emissions differently, depending on shopping habits and food storage practices.
As part of her work in product design, she is developing prototypes such as dispensers that allow consumers to refill portions of grains or other items. She emphasizes practical solutions, including using personal containers and portion guidance, to minimize waste.
Her research highlights the potential for expanding packaging-free food options while considering hygiene, practicality, and consumer mindset.
