The Technical University of Liberec (TUL) has become a major hub for European research on India through the ESIND project (European Representations of India), led by Associate Professor Martin Fárek. The project brings together 110 researchers from 38 countries to systematically compare European perspectives on Indian culture, history, society, and religion.
ESIND builds on Fárek’s foundational work India in the Eyes of Europeans, exploring how centuries-old European preconceptions continue to influence modern understanding and international relations. The project includes multilingual text databases, international summer schools, workshops, conference panels, and popular science outreach.
The first ESIND summer school at TUL welcomed 32 young researchers from 16 countries, highlighting the project’s international reach and focus on Central and Eastern European perspectives often absent from mainstream India studies.
ESIND is funded by the European COST program and is open to both academic and non-academic participants, fostering collaboration and deeper intercultural understanding.
