The University of Nyíregyháza has taken a major step forward in science and education by acquiring a state-of-the-art digital microscope. This new equipment is set to significantly raise the standard of natural science teaching and research at the university. The high-resolution device was funded through the “Digital Education and Practice-Oriented Training Development at the University of Nyíregyháza” project (RRF-2.1.2-21-2022-00004), supported by a non-refundable grant of 1.008 billion forints from the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility.
Capable of magnifying samples up to 4000–5000 times, the digital microscope was officially introduced on April 25, 2025, during a special demonstration event marking Earth Day. Dr. habil Jekő József, Head of Department, and Dr. Márta Dobróné Tóth, college professor, showcased the device to guests, highlighting how it enables high-level, practical training for students in biology, chemistry, engineering, and agricultural fields. The microscope is especially valuable for student research and faculty projects, offering advanced imaging and measurement capabilities. Unlike traditional electron microscopes, it requires no sample preparation and delivers detailed images quickly and easily.
During the event, visitors tested the microscope with a variety of samples—plant, animal, industrial, and soil materials—demonstrating its versatility. The equipment is now available in the Department of Chemistry at the Institute of Environmental and Natural Sciences, where it primarily serves students in environmental science, chemistry, and biology. Importantly, such advanced digital microscopy is unique to the region, giving Nyíregyházi University students and local high school groups a distinct advantage in scientific learning and career orientation.
The investment is part of a broader campus development project running from June 2022 through April 2026, aimed at upgrading educational and training infrastructure and enhancing teaching methodology across the university.
