In the freshly released 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, the University of Szeged (SZTE) has achieved remarkable recognition on the world stage — earning top 100 positions in not one, but two sustainability categories.
SZTE ranked 53rd globally in the “Life Below Water” category (SDG 14), which evaluates efforts toward ocean and marine protection, and 77th in “Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions” (SDG 16). With over 2,300 universities assessed worldwide, these results place SZTE firmly among the global sustainability elite.
The university also maintained its position among the top 400 in the overall sustainability index — securing a shared first place in Hungary for 2025.
In total, SZTE leads in 9 SDG categories nationally, outperforming 11 other Hungarian institutions featured in the ranking. The university demonstrated strong performance in areas like quality education, clean water, gender equality, and climate action.
Even more impressively, SZTE made major international leaps in categories such as Good Health & Well-being (SDG 3) and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17) — improving by more than 100 ranks in a single year.
This continued success highlights SZTE’s deep commitment to sustainability, global responsibility, and the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals — not just as an academic institution, but as a key driver of societal impact in Hungary and beyond.
