Aalto University has launched its ‘A! Sign of Change’ fundraising campaign to mark its 15th anniversary, aiming to raise €30 million and attract 1,500 donors over the next two years. The initiative will support high-quality education, research, and innovation that drive Finland’s global competitiveness and sustainability.
President Ilkka Niemelä highlighted Aalto’s achievements, noting a 50% increase in master’s degrees and scientific publications, along with the creation of 100 startups annually within its ecosystem. “The donations will strengthen our ability to meet growing demands in education, research, and innovation, shaping a sustainable future for Finland,” Niemelä said.
Addressing Funding Gaps
Government funding now accounts for just 54% of Aalto’s total budget, down one-third in real terms since 2010. Additional support will bolster endowment funds, spearhead research projects, student support initiatives, and entrepreneurial activities.
Campaign Kickoff
The campaign launched with a visual stunt, temporarily altering iconic Helsinki and Espoo light signs by adding exclamation marks to the letter “A,” symbolizing Aalto’s societal impact. Signs at locations such as Helsinki Central Station and Savoy Restaurant will remain altered until 13 January.
Sari Baldauf, Chair of Aalto’s Fundraising Campaign Committee, stressed the urgency of investment: “Finland needs world-class research, talent, and innovation to stay competitive. High-quality education is key to future growth.”
Building Finland’s Future
As government funding declines, Aalto calls on alumni, partners, and the public to support its mission. Donations will provide immediate resources for groundbreaking projects and long-term stability through endowment growth.
