Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań has released a new episode of its podcast “Science Happens Here”, examining how Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has triggered a profound transformation in Germany’s defence policy.
Host Michał Larek speaks with Krzysztof Żerko, an international relations student at AMU, about the concept of “Zeitenwende” – an “epochal shift” announced by German authorities to overhaul the country’s military posture.
The discussion covers the Bundeswehr’s decades-long underfunding and historical constraints, the shift in public perception of the army, and the controversies surrounding Germany’s military aid to Ukraine – from symbolic gestures such as the delivery of 5,000 helmets to the provision of heavy weaponry.
Żerko highlights how Germany’s view of Russia has moved from “partner” to “threat” and examines whether Berlin is prepared to take greater responsibility for European security.
The podcast, produced with AMU’s Faculty of Philosophy and supported by the Excellence Initiative – Research University, is available on Spotify and Castbox.
