Atlantic Technological University (ATU) has become a key partner in the CO-CREATE project, a €4 million cross-border research initiative aimed at using art and design to drive societal transformation across Ireland. Led by the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) in partnership with Belfast School of Art at Ulster University, ATU and the University of Limerick are collaborating to develop community-focused research in areas such as public services, climate action, health, and inclusive heritage.
Funded through the North-South Research Programme, the project will create flexible Shared Island curricula, a multidisciplinary doctoral network, and arts-led methods to engage diverse communities in research. ATU’s President, Dr Orla Flynn, highlighted the importance of cross-disciplinary collaboration in addressing complex challenges and delivering practical solutions that improve lives.
Dr Lorna Ross, Head of the Department of Design and Creative Media at ATU, emphasized that the award demonstrates the unique contribution of art and design in solving societal and environmental issues. This initiative reinforces ATU’s commitment to STEAM principles and its position as a leading design institution in the West of Ireland.
