The University of Sopron has launched its traditional Balekhét, welcoming an unprecedented number of first-year students to the Alma Mater. The opening day featured ceremonial chariot parades as new students from the Faculties of Wood Engineering, Creative Industries, Forestry Engineering, Economics, and Pedagogy joined their seniors in festive processions.
Balekhét is a more than 150-year-old tradition where first-year students, playfully called “assholes,” are guided by seniors, known as “firmák,” to navigate the university and city life. The week includes dean welcome speeches, university tours, botanical garden visits, evening singing, and traditional programs designed to instill discipline, respect, and community cohesion.
Practical support is integrated into the week, helping freshmen with enrollment, dormitory placement, and administrative tasks. This year, the Government Window Bus also facilitated official processes on campus.
The University of Sopron emphasizes that Balekhét is not only about fun but about fostering a lifelong sense of community among its students.
