In late July, construction began on two new playgrounds for the Munsel-Ling School in the Spiti region of India. The initiative, called JUGAAD, is organized by the non-profit Himalayan Patron and involves one playground built with European volunteers and another with the local community. Students from the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Brno University of Technology are actively contributing to the project.
A team of five students—Katarina Tannhauserova, Nikol Krasna, Hanus Suchanek, David Fabera, and Ondrej Kreuzman—is working under challenging conditions, with limited budgets of up to 80,000 CZK per team and a 12-day deadline. While the students bring expertise in playground design, local builders offer practical skills for using available materials and tools.
The project aims to provide children with space for recreation, sports, and social development while also serving as a model for combining technical education with humanitarian aid. According to project coordinator and Brno University of Technology graduate Jiri Sazel, the playgrounds will bring joy to children and foster positive change in the community.
The Munsel-Ling School, founded in 1996, now educates around 1,000 students from preschool to the 12th grade, with half attending as boarders. It has been recognized nationally for its long-term contributions to child care and education.
