A theoretical computer scientist from Charles University is shedding new light on the fundamental principles behind algorithms and the digital world.Václav Rozhoň, based at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, explains that algorithms go far beyond social media and modern technology. According to him, algorithms are simply step by step processes that shape everything from cooking recipes to human thinking.He highlights that computer science is not just about programming but about understanding the deeper structures and limitations of problem solving methods. In his view, programmers build applications, while theorists like him focus on discovering the core principles that make those applications possible.Rozhoň also points out that algorithms exist everywhere in daily life, even in the human brain, which he compares to a system executing complex processes. He emphasizes that computers are merely tools for implementing these algorithms, not the essence of the science itself.Reflecting on the rapid development of artificial intelligence, the researcher notes that traditional long term theoretical work may be changing. With AI accelerating innovation, the time between discovery and real world application is becoming shorter, raising new questions about the future of research priorities.Beyond academia, Rozhoň is also involved in science communication, working on projects to make complex topics more understandable for the public.
