Róbert Marciniak, Associate Professor at the Department of Strategic Management of Corvinus University of Budapest, recently examined the development of autonomous vehicle technologies and business models in California, one of the world’s leading hubs of self-driving innovation.
During his visit, he tested Waymo’s autonomous ride-hailing service in both San Francisco and Los Angeles, experiencing firsthand one of the most advanced robotaxi systems available. In his reflections, published in Qubit, Marciniak emphasized not only the impressive technological progress but also the dramatic improvements in road safety that autonomous driving promises.
He noted that Waymo’s valuation has already surpassed that of Ford, highlighting the disruptive potential of autonomous mobility in the global automotive industry. Moreover, he pointed out that traveling by robotaxi in Los Angeles is now cheaper than taking a traditional taxi in Budapest—illustrating how quickly these services are becoming commercially viable.
The insights provide a glimpse into how autonomous transportation may reshape both mobility and business models in the near future.
