The WILD-SM programme (Community Engaging in Wildlife Sustainable Management in RO-HU Crossborder Area) brings together the University of Debrecen and University of Timișoara to monitor, protect, and manage wildlife along the Romanian-Hungarian border.
Over the one-year project, teams conducted species inventories, population surveys, genetic analyses, and health risk assessments for wild and domestic animals. The initiative follows a One Health approach, considering the health of animals, humans, and the environment together.
The ROHU Centre for Regional Border Wildlife Monitoring was established to track species movement, health risks, and support unified game management. The project also aims to reduce human-wildlife conflicts, improve animal husbandry, and enhance food chain safety in the region.
Supported by the Interreg VI-A Romania-Hungary Programme, WILD-SM received EUR 159,566.4 from the European Regional Development Fund, co-financed by Romania and Hungary.
