Dublin City University (DCU) has introduced Ireland’s first Graduate Diploma in Gifted Education at its Institute of Education, aiming to support the tens of thousands of intellectually gifted children in Irish schools, including those who are twice exceptional—gifted but with additional learning needs.Dr Orla Dunne, Co-chair of the programme, emphasised the importance of recognising gifted students in classrooms, not just in extracurricular programmes. She highlighted that while the Centre for Talented Youth Ireland (CTYI) provides advanced learning opportunities, students need consistent access to challenging materials throughout the school year. The programme seeks to equip teachers, principals, educational professionals, and parents with the tools to identify and support gifted children, fostering their full potential and encouraging innovative learning environments. Dr Dunne also pointed to international models in the Netherlands, Germany, and the United States as examples of effective in-school gifted education.
