Karolína Smýkalová, a doctoral student at the Faculty of Arts of Palacký University Olomouc, has received the prestigious Bader Scholarship for the 2026–2027 academic year. The scholarship supports doctoral research in the history and theory of art and architecture.Smýkalová’s project examines the reconstruction and interpretation of medieval architecture in Spain during the dictatorship of Francisco Franco (1939–1975). Her research focuses on how so-called Lombard-style churches from the 11th century were restored and presented as symbols of Spain’s Christian heritage, often serving ideological purposes during the Franco regime. The scholarship will allow her to conduct research abroad, particularly in Spain and Italy. She plans to study archival materials in cities such as Zaragoza, Huesca, Madrid and Alcalá de Henares, as well as visit historic churches in the Pyrenees region. She will also work at the renowned Bibliotheca Hertziana to place her findings within a broader European context. The Bader Scholarship, founded by philanthropist Alfred Bader, is awarded annually to outstanding doctoral students and supports international research stays and academic collaboration.
