Researchers at Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU) have quantified the environmental impact of common daily activities to guide consumers toward more sustainable lifestyles. The study examines food, housing, mobility, and consumption, measuring effects across six planetary boundary categories including climate change, biodiversity, and water use.
Key findings show that an average omnivore diet and daily car use can exceed annual sustainable limits, while plant-based diets and cycling significantly reduce environmental pressure. The research provides actionable insights for individuals to make choices with the greatest positive impact on the planet.
The study is published in the journal Sustainable Production and Consumption and also discussed in the book Is My Life Sustainable?, co-authored by DTU professor Morten Sommer.
