Researchers at Uppsala University have identified eleven genetic regions that significantly influence the composition and function of gut bacteria. The findings come from two large international studies involving more than 28000 participants, making it the most comprehensive investigation to date of the link between human genetics and the gut microbiome.
The study reveals that several of the identified gene variants are associated with increased risks of gluten intolerance, hemorrhoids, and cardiovascular diseases. According to Professor Tove Fall, the results provide deeper insight into how genetic factors shape gut biology and overall health.
The researchers hope the findings will contribute to improved prevention and treatment strategies by better understanding the interaction between genes, gut function, and microbiome composition.
