The rector of Universidade Católica Portuguesa has emphasized the importance of adopting artificial intelligence ethically in higher education. In an opinion article published in L’Osservatore Romano, the academic leader discussed both the opportunities and risks that AI brings to universities.According to the article, artificial intelligence can significantly improve research, innovation, and organizational efficiency while also enabling personalized learning and better access to knowledge for students. However, the rector warned that excessive reliance on technology could weaken attention, concentration, and critical thinking skills. The article proposes a “third path” between technological optimism and pessimism—an ethical adoption of AI. Universities, especially those with strong humanistic values, are encouraged to ensure that technology supports human dignity, academic freedom, and responsible innovation rather than replacing essential educational principles.
