An exhibition at University of Graz is exploring the realities of poverty from medieval times to the present, offering visitors a unique historical and social perspective. Titled “(Life and) Survival in Poverty in the Middle Ages and the Present,” the exhibition opened on 2026 in the foyer of the university library and will run until the end of March. The project highlights the experiences of people living in poverty through historical texts and modern comparisons. History students created audio listening stations that present voices and stories inspired by medieval sources, helping visitors understand how economic hardship shaped everyday life centuries ago. The exhibition also draws parallels with contemporary experiences of poverty, including challenges faced by people struggling with unemployment and rising living costs.Developed in collaboration with social organizations and cultural partners, the exhibition aims to raise awareness about the historical roots of poverty and encourage discussion about social inequality today. Guided tours for school groups and a public panel discussion later in March will further expand the conversation on poverty across different eras.
