Two family therapy programs at Semmelweis University have received major funding from the MOL – New Europe Foundation through the Imre Kozma Pediatric Healthcare Plus Grant, allowing a significant expansion of services.
The funding supports medical systemic family therapy for children and adolescents struggling with chronic illnesses, mental health disorders, and eating disorders. According to Vice-Rector Dr. Attila Szabó, the initiative strengthens a biopsychosocial approach to healing, recognizing the essential role families play in recovery.
The university’s Mental Health Outpatient Clinic and the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy will increase their treatment capacities, introduce nearly 200 additional annual therapy sessions, and expand specialist staff. Services will now be available more broadly, including evening appointments.
The expansion also supports education: starting in September, three new psychology master’s programs will launch, including an MSc in Systemic Psychology with a strong focus on family-level interventions.
