Dr Michał Pierański from the Faculty of Chemistry at Gdansk University of Technology has secured a prestigious National Science Centre SONATINA 9 grant worth nearly PLN 1.25 million. His project will investigate the tolerance mechanisms of Streptococcus agalactiae to reactive oxygen species used in antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDI).
The research will include a six-month internship at Ulm University Hospital in Germany, working with Prof. Barbara Spellerberg, a leading expert in streptococcal biology. The findings could pave the way for improved therapies against antibiotic-resistant infections, particularly in newborns and pregnant women.
