Ghent University has announced that Olympic medalist Bashir Abdi will receive an institutional honorary doctorate in recognition of his outstanding sporting achievements and exceptional social commitment.
Born in 1989 in Mogadishu, Abdi came to Belgium as a refugee and grew up in Ghent. He rose to international prominence as one of Belgium’s most successful long-distance runners. His historic Olympic performances include a bronze medal in the marathon at the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games and a silver medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, along with setting the European marathon record in 2021.
Beyond athletics, Abdi has demonstrated strong social engagement. He co-founded Sportaround, promoting social cohesion and health through sport, and established the Bashir Abdi Fund in partnership with Ghent University Hospital to support healthcare providers both physically and mentally.
Rector Petra De Sutter and Vice-Rector Herwig Reynaert praised Abdi, stating that his values of inclusion, excellence, and social responsibility closely align with the university’s mission. The honorary doctorate ceremony will take place on March 8, 2026, during the “Bashir’s Run” event at the Wouter Weylandt Stadium in Gentbrugge.
