Researchers at Ghent University are raising awareness about the hidden dangers of popular house and garden plants, many of which can be toxic to humans and animals.
According to Professor Lars Chatrou from the Faculty of Sciences, species such as peace palm, oleander, Kalanchoë, lilies, Dieffenbachia, philodendron, and monstera may cause severe health problems ranging from skin irritation to heart failure or kidney damage. In children, the risks are even higher due to their smaller body weight and faster metabolism.
Chatrou emphasizes that plants are the third most common cause of poisoning after drugs and chemicals, with children and pets being the most vulnerable. While most toxic plants are not deadly, some – like hemlock, blue monkshood, and the highly poisonous daphne mezereum – can be fatal if ingested.
The professor urges families to carefully research plant species before bringing them indoors or into gardens, particularly when young children or pets are present.
