In the small settlement of Polom near Trhova Kamenice, the Church of Saint Kunhuta was once on the brink of collapse. Purchased in 2007 for a symbolic sum, it was rescued by a group of dedicated volunteers led by historian Frantisek Vaclavik. Their efforts focused on repairing the roof and preserving the original structure using traditional carpentry techniques.
The project, supported by grants, donations, and countless hours of unpaid work, has kept the church standing without turning it into a heavily restored tourist site. Instead, the group aims to maintain its authentic atmosphere, hosting occasional concerts and performances for respectful visitors.
Their goal is to protect the site from overtourism while fostering a sense of community and preserving its unique character for future generations.
