Howest University of Applied Sciences has announced the launch of SO Howest, a new collaboration with partner secondary schools in response to the modernization of education in Flanders. Starting from the 2025–2026 academic year, the seventh year of secondary education will include pathways designed to prepare students either for the labour market or for higher education.
Through SO Howest, students will gain early exposure to the approach and expectations of higher education. The program includes digital learning paths, training in study skills, domain-specific workshops, and on-campus experiences at Howest. Secondary school teachers will also receive tools and methodologies to optimally shape the new curriculum.
“Our goal is to lower the threshold to higher education by familiarizing both students and teachers with the university environment early on,” explains Mieke Demeyere, Director of Education, Students and Internationalization at Howest. “This collaboration gives young people a strong starting point when transitioning to higher education.”
