The Timár Ensemble held a special dance history class at Magyar Táncművészeti Egyetem in honor of Timár Sándor’s 95th birthday. The event was part of the university’s 75th anniversary celebrations and paid tribute to the legendary folk dance educator, researcher, and choreographer.
Timár Sándor, who co-founded the university’s first folk dance department in 1971, taught generations of dancers to speak the language of movement “like a mother tongue.” His methodology emphasized learning folk dance organically, progressing from simple movement patterns to rich expressive phrases—similar to how a child learns to speak.
The performance featured excerpts from the Timár Archívum series, showcasing his iconic Kalotaszeg choreographies alongside historic film footage and stories from collaborators and students. A new piece choreographed by Timár Gergely honored Timár’s teaching style through the shared experience of dance with tradition bearers.
To close the program, all students received a copy of Timár a Mesti, a book by Kiss Krisztina, personally handed over by Timár Böske and Timár Mihály with greetings from the master himself.
