From 18 to 22 August 2025, Vienna will host the International Congress of Immunology organized by the International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS), positioning the city as a global hub for immunological research. The event, themed “Immunology without borders,” will bring together approximately 5,000 leading researchers to discuss advances in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases ranging from allergies and autoimmune disorders to infectious diseases and cancer.
Professor Rudolf Valenta, President of the IUIS Congress 2025 and Professor of Allergology at MedUni Vienna, emphasizes the societal importance of immunology: “Immunological research improves people’s lives in the long term. Discoveries like monoclonal antibodies have revolutionized diagnostics and therapy, and now the focus is on developing highly effective treatments.”
Valenta’s research highlights carrier protein-based allergy vaccines, showing promising results in clinical trials. By combining defined allergen fragments with carrier proteins such as hepatitis B proteins, these vaccines can reduce allergic reactions while offering additional protective effects. Valenta considers this approach a model for future therapies, including personalized allergy treatments and vaccines against infectious diseases and potentially cancer.
The congress, organized by Valenta alongside Vice President Barbara Bohle and Scientific Program Committee Chair Wilfried Ellmeier, will facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration, showcase the latest research, and explore innovative strategies to address global health challenges.
