A master’s thesis from Laurea University of Applied Sciences has introduced a new tool designed to modernise organisational strategy development. Students Ilona Snellman and Juska Kivioja created the “Organisation Canvas,” a framework aimed at integrating foresight into strategy work to help organisations respond more effectively to changes in their operating environment.
The thesis, titled “Organisation Canvas: Organisational Strategy Work from Foresight to Implementation”, emphasises the role of futures literacy – the ability to understand how future trends impact the present. It argues that systematic foresight, combined with continuous evaluation and leadership commitment, is essential for successful strategy processes.
Drawing on a theoretical foundation in organisational management and strategy, the study was supplemented with interviews and practical applications informed by the authors’ own experience in NGO work. The research underlines the need for structured strategy processes involving foresight, analysis, implementation, and evaluation, backed by leadership enthusiasm and engagement.
As part of the project, the researchers also developed the “Diamond Factory,” a guide to support the use of the Organisation Canvas. The tool has already attracted interest among organisations and was tested through interviews, where it was described as both practical and inspiring.
The findings, the authors say, aim to provide organisations with practical resources for building flexible, proactive strategies in an era of rapid change.
