Karlstad University leadership has shared updates on ongoing development initiatives, including new workspace arrangements and expanded collaboration on campus. The university management and five administrative departments have recently moved into renovated premises in House 1B, Floor 4, adopting a more flexible working model aimed at increasing space utilization, maintaining a positive work environment, and reducing costs.A key reason for the renovation is the upcoming relocation of Swedish Defence University to the same floor. The co-location of the two higher education institutions in Karlstad is expected to create new opportunities for collaboration. The official inauguration of the shared space will take place on May 13.The reorganization forms part of a broader effort to reduce facility costs and ensure efficient use of university premises. Karlstad University currently has the lowest rental cost per square meter among Swedish universities, a position the leadership aims to maintain in order to prioritize funding for education and research. In parallel, administrative development work is ongoing, particularly in exploring the use of generative AI in internal processes. Staff received foundational training in AI last year, and the university is now identifying workflows where AI can improve efficiency. The initiative emphasizes supporting employees and freeing up time rather than replacing staff. AI ambassadors from various departments will be appointed to share experiences and guide colleagues interested in implementing AI tools. The leadership describes both the co-location and AI integration as forward-looking change processes that require reflection and openness to innovation.
