A mathematician from University of Klagenfurt has received a prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship to study complex problems in discrete mathematics. The fellowship will support two years of research at UiT The Arctic University of Norway, the world’s northernmost university. The research focuses on solving difficult optimisation problems where many variables make it challenging to determine the best possible solution. By analysing hidden structures and symmetries in mathematical problems, the researcher aims to develop methods that help computers identify optimal solutions more efficiently.Such work has practical applications in areas like computer chip design, where reducing complex connections can make manufacturing cheaper and more efficient. The fellowship highlights the importance of advanced mathematical research in addressing real-world technological challenges.
