Professor Piotr Czauderna, head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery and Urology at the University Clinical Center of the Medical University of Gdansk, has been appointed as a social advisor to the President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki.
For Professor Czauderna, the nomination came as both an honor and a continuation of his previous work. During the two terms of President Andrzej Duda, he served as chairman of the Health Protection Council. In his new role, he will analyze legislative acts, government proposals, and may also support the President’s own legislative initiatives.
During remarks following the appointment, Professor Czauderna highlighted the major challenges facing Poland’s healthcare system. These include long waiting times for specialist appointments and advanced diagnostic procedures, difficulties in hospital emergency departments, and financial pressures on the National Health Fund that directly affect hospitals.
He stressed that shortages of medical specialists remain a central obstacle and that increasing training capacities will take years before improvements are felt. Professor Czauderna also pointed to solutions such as centralized appointment systems, already in use in some countries, which could improve patient access to medical services.
Balancing his advisory role with his responsibilities at the Medical University of Gdansk, Professor Czauderna emphasized the strength of his medical team, which ensures that clinical work continues seamlessly even during his absence.
