Doctors at the Medical University of Warsaw have successfully saved the life of an 18 year old patient through one of the most complex transplant procedures ever performed in Poland. The young man suffered from a severe liver lung syndrome, which prevented his body from receiving adequate oxygen despite breathing.
The transplant was performed on January 9, 2025, using a donor liver and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support before, during, and after the surgery. The patient required ECMO for a total of 48 days, making it one of the longest uses of this method in the world for a liver transplant patient.
The surgery was carried out by a multidisciplinary team led by Professor Michal Grat and Professor Mariusz Kusmierczyk. The success was possible thanks to the combined efforts of specialists in transplant surgery, cardiology, anesthesiology, and intensive care.
Today, the patient has recovered well and is preparing to return to school in September. Experts at the Medical University of Warsaw emphasized that this achievement demonstrates not only the progress of Polish transplantology but also the critical role of interdisciplinary cooperation.
