Individuality, creativity, music and community were at the heart of the PEMA Open Day hosted by the Institute of Popular Music at the University of Miskolc. The event offered prospective students a comprehensive insight into the institution’s light music training, introducing them to its educational philosophy, instructors and diverse specialisations.
Visitors were welcomed with sessions in solfège, music theory, choir experiences and piano entrance preparation, while also discovering instrumental pathways such as drums, vocals and bass guitar. During the guided tour of the educational building located on Hajógyári Island, participants had the opportunity to observe classes in progress, sing together and receive detailed information about the admission process.
“This is a highly diverse and multifaceted programme, where students gain insight into both Hungarian and international popular music,” said Zoltán Gombkötő, a second-year student at the institute.
The undergraduate programme in popular music was launched in 2024 following extensive preparation. According to Prof. Dr. Horváth Zita, Rector of the University of Miskolc, the initiative was created with the goal of training well-qualified artists and performers for the profession. She also expressed the university’s intention to expand the programme in the future with a master’s degree.
Emphasising the institute’s student-centred approach, Mátyás Szakadáti, Director of the Institute of Popular Music, highlighted the importance of personalised education. He noted that beyond musical training, self-awareness plays a crucial role in the curriculum, with a strong focus on identifying and developing each student’s unique strengths. He also underlined the exceptional community spirit that has emerged within the programme.
Applications to the University of Miskolc are open until 15 February.
