As intercultural teams become the norm in both education and the workplace, the need for effective communication strategies is greater than ever. Addressing this growing demand, Dr. Nicholas Lee and Dr. Tamás Kiss, associate professors at Sunway University, delivered an insightful lecture titled “The Value of Intercultural Competence: Navigating Language, Identity and Conflict.”
The event was opened by Dr. Enikő Maior, Vice-Rector for Education at Óbuda University, and drew a highly engaged audience. Through real-world examples and interactive tools like Kahoot, the presentation explored how language, identity, and cultural expectations can create misunderstandings – and how these challenges can be overcome.
Dr. Lee and Dr. Kiss emphasized key conflict-resolution strategies such as active listening, shifting perspectives, and perception awareness. Their practical approach resonated with students and staff alike, offering immediate takeaways for anyone working in multicultural environments.
This lecture stems from the Hungarian-Malaysian Rectors’ Forum held in February, where Prof. Dr. Levente Kovács of Óbuda University signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Prof. Sibrandes Poppema, President of Sunway University. The agreement aims to strengthen academic collaboration through joint research and exchange programs.
Sunway University, based in Malaysia, is among the world’s top 2% (QS World Rankings) and boasts a diverse student population, with up to 18% international students and an employment rate of 87–98% after graduation.
